ughhhhhhhhh

vertigo. for reals. it's been like 2-3 weeks now and still hanging around. it makes life less fun...especially when you're looking at your potential customers (or computer screen) and they are moving. not physically, but what i see is movement. spinning.
at least i haven't done a face plant while getting out of bed in a while :)
it's the little things, y'all!

last time....

i know....this is getting ridiculous but home decor means EVERYTHING to me so humor me, yes?????

this is THE final draft. i picked some paint colors and let brett have his opinion. he's def. my husband bc he chose blue.  i may or may not have given him 10 different shades of blue and grey but whatev. the color is still TBD but its blue. and he L.O.V.E.S. this fish rug. so i'll take baby boy's at-the-moment  soccer kicks as a thumbs up!! since the wall color will be blue and the rug, i think i'll stick to neutral white for most everything else.
here's the low down:
the crib: sorelle city lights commuter convertible
striped fabric: fabricguru.com for crib skirt
glider: may have to find a cheaper one :( but i <3 it babyletto kyoto
dresser: ikea
rug: homedecorators.com
pendant: shadesoflight.com retro honeycomb
reclaimed wood shelves: etsy.com
accessories: west elm spheres, container store basket, jayson home burlap vases

tell me what you think?!?!?!

VEG out!

...in a GREAT way!!!  Spaghetti squash and pesto. DELISH!  of course you can add a chicken breast or another meat on the side but i didn't have anything and brett is out of town so i didn't need it.

you can ask the hubs...i love spaghetti squash, he does not.

1 small spaghetti squash
baby bella mushrooms, sliced
1 small head of broccoli, chopped
1/4 sweet onion, chopped
1/4 green pepper, chopped
Pesto:
handful of defrosted spinach
handful of basil
2 garlic cloves (only 1 if you don't like "taste" of garlic)
parm cheese
1/2 lemon juice
s&p
EVOO

Cut squash in half and scoop out seeds.  season with salt and pepper and EVOO.  roast cut side down in 375 oven for 30-45 mins.
saute veggies until soft and slightly brown in small amount of EVOO.
in a food processor, pulse all pesto ingredients except EVOO until finely chopped. then add 1 teaspoon at a time of EVOO and pulse. pesto should not be liquidy.
take squash out of oven and let cool....or if you're like me, use a oven mitt b/c i'm not patient! use a fork to scrap squash which makes "spaghetti noodles". SO neat! combine all the ingredients and top with parm cheese.

ENJOY!!!!!!!

Beautiful, Bouncing Baby.....

BOY!!!!!
i can't really explain why i thought it was a boy this whole time but i did.  right before my appt i had one millisecond of a doubt b/c of all those myths like if the heartbeat is this/if you crave this/if you look like this, then you're having a.....
but no, trust your gut ladies!  woman's intuition, i always say!!!  and i thought it was super cute b/c brett kept saying "i don't care what it is, blah blah blah" (i wanted a boy and said so freely) but when we found out he was so excited b/c "every father wants a son"...shut the front door my heart melted seeing into the future watching brett teach baby boy to play golf with his first set of fisher price clubs.
so, now on to VERY IMPORTANT things.....the Nursery!!!!!!!  here are a couple inspiration photos...

i know one is a dining room but i love that striped chair in a serious way. but i also like stripe/chevron rugs....hmmmmm what's a decorator to do?!?!

second on the agenda....it's FALL!!!!!  seriously, the mornings are glorious here...in the 60's...and it doesn't get that hot. i'm breaking out the boots and i'm super psyched about it. i've decorated and i keep wanting to buy more pumpkins.....is that wrong?

made by yours truly

and btw, i'm 5 1/2 months this week!!!!!!!!!  at first i thought it was going reeeeeeally slow b/c we knew so soon but now i seriously can.not.stop.time. brett is busy with work and week long trips here and there and i feel like we're going to get blindsided by this baby. it'll be january and we haven't painted or decorated or gotten a baby medicine cabinet ready or read enough books about what to do if your baby .....fill in the blank. oh well, here's a pic to lighten the mood!!!!!
and he was kicking away while i was trying to take this :)

what's cooking in the kitchen

this is a long overdue post about what recipes i've tried out lately but y'all...they have been SOOOOO good.  i'm not one to pat myself on the back but try 'em. for reals.
so again, i have trouble sneaking veggies in this house so what better way to mask them than CHOCOLATE!!!!  chocolate chip zucchini bread. SO delish.  i made it with whole wheat flour but if you wanted it a little lighter and fluffier, maybe do all purpose. the recipes is here.

ok so back to the veggies....i know it seems like i'm a veggie nazi but seriously, we have unhealthy stuff too so i want to even it out!  next was ratatouille.  and it was easy peasy nice and easy!!!  i'm telling you.
chop all the veggies roughly the same size; saute until soft with a little stock; top with cheese and bake until melty and yum.
before

AFTER!
and last, no veggies included, shark cupcakes for my love.  sharks are his favorite. xoxo

hurley is in for a rude awakening....

that's what everyone keeps telling us.....because he'll be moving down to child #2!!!  I'm 13 1/2 weeks now and FINALLY feeling good after quite a rough start.  but we are SOOOOO excited with a few nerves mixed in there.  my fear is no longer with the day of....its the first couple months that EVERYONE keeps telling me are.....tough, not the best, exhausting, terrible. whatever....i can handle it right?!?!  right.
a couple other things:

work has been busy so my diy projects have slowed down.....to a hault. and my one day off today i spent it WATCHING LIFETIME MOVIES!!!! (and weeding)

i'm heading back to louisiana in september and can.not.wait!  a full week of fun and friends and family and food oooooooh wee!

we're looking into a vacation in december before i'm banned from travelling...i'm thinking caribbean.  any suggestions????  it seems to be the busiest and most expensive time of the year but that's when we know for sure brett has vaca. i'm pretty sure i'm going to look H.O.T.T. in a swimsuit.....either that or a beached whale. tomato, tomato.

adventures in pickling...

i don't know what made us do it...maybe we were debating what pickle brand was the best but we decided to pickle our own pickles.  i follow enough blogs that i KNEW someone out there had experience so i bought some pickling "cukes" as they're called, a jar funnel, and we had everything else!
B loves all things hot so we're experimenting so he can make his own hotHotHOT pickles and i can have my dills.

SIKE!

y'all!!!!!!  i made pesto last night that went over so well i did a happy dance in my head.........
BROCCOLI PESTO!!!  so sneaky but sooooooooo good.  seriously, try.it. if you have the task of trying to get veggies into meals like i do, this is the EASIEST way.  i just had to double time it in the kitchen to get rid of the evidence while he was in the office :)  so sneaky.

Broccoli Pesto
2 cups of pesto
1 large broccoli (around 2 cups)

A couple of stems fresh basil or sage
1/2 lemon, juice
1/2 cup hazelnuts
2 cloves garlic
1/2 cup olive oil
2 tbsp water
salt & pepper

Throw all the ingredients in a blender or food processor. Pulse for about a minute. Taste it. Add more olive oil or water if it feels too dry, and salt & pepper according to taste.
as you know, i'm not a big measurer but i eyeballed this....and added maybe a tablespoon or premade pesto to hide the broccoli-ness a bit more. and i added cayenne pepper...just a pinch. i put it on pasta with chopped artichokes, tomatoes, roasted red peppers and shrimp. YUMMMM!          for real....try.it.

fabulous fourth

we had a great weekend...considering we both have been VERY busy with work (i was out of town one week, then B was the next) it was soooooooooo good!  a friend here and her husband have a boat so we went saturday to a dock and eat restaurant on tybee and then sunday went out all day to this little island beach and watched fireworks.  i love savannah a little bit more after that fun-ness!!!  unfortunately my brain was still rocking a day or two after but well worth it :)
side note....do you ever look over to your sig.other and think 'how did i get so lucky'????  i did that all weekend, i tell you what! not that i don't think this thought ever but sometimes we let life, work, laundry etc cloud our googley eyes so i'm here to say...embrace this movie moment and love it!!

next on the agenda....trip to charleston (fun) and maybe some more work trips for both of us (not fun).

lastly, i bought some rhubarb after eating at a restaurant in knoxville called Rouxbarb... it had the BEEEST rhubarb chutney and cheddar biscuits i could ever imagine. gawwwd, i'm just excited thinking about possibly recreating it. YUMMMMMMMMMM

what a GRRREAT weekend!!!!  friday night was an impromptu date night with the hubs since my papa sent me a ruth's chris gc. we sat at the bar and listened to music and ate delish food.  we walked around downtown and sat outside and listened to some live music....ooooooh real good feel good night!!!
i had to work saturday (boo) but we had some shrimp that we planned on cooking. shrimp tacos YUMYUM! and then sunday, we had a VERY impromptu trip with another couple to hilton head island. we haven't been there since we moved to savannah and it was gorg!!!!!  beach time, bachi ball fun, yummy food and good company.  what a great weekend before a week of work travel in knoxville!

bad

i'm so bad yall!!!  its been a month....a MONTH!  geez i need to get on the ball.  but in my defense, after this post brett got home from deployment, i went to charlotte for a week to train someone, and we went out of town for memorial weekend. pics from that to come soon....

so i finally finished the chair...THE chair.  this is the goodwill $15, horribly ugly, stinky chair! and i looooooooove it yall!!  and brett likes it too.  he thinks i should sell it but this is the first so its sentimental i guess.  there WILL be other chair and i will sell those....b/c i can't fit anymore chairs in our house! HA!
i'm still in the process of making a cushion for said chair but you get the idea!
also, here is the living room....i'm in the process of doing a gallery wall around the tv...much to the hubby's hesitation. also, i want maybe some roman shades for those windows...good idea or bad???  we're keeping the paint color. :(  its just too big/high/complicated to paint so i need to liven up this room but also keep it cohesive. hmmmm.....
ok GO!

discovery

y'all!!!!  this stuff is AAAAAH-mazing. forreal.  it has less calories than skim milk...60vs90 but it's just a different taste. just a little. i've been using it in baking when they call for milk (its a little thicker than skim so it might be able to pass for cream??) and in cereal and even in coffee! your coffee will not be as light but it tastes real, real good. also something i LOVE...fat free 1/2 and 1/2. WHHHHATT!?!?!!  so great i don't feel bad about using it in my coffee!  Silk also has vanilla which i haven't tasted yet but it only has 90 cals just like skim.  that would be good in smoothies/baking too.
also, i made chocolate chip cupcakes (sans frosting) from bethanny's book. she's not playing. i used whole wheat flour instead of oat flour but they are GOOOOD...and instead of frosting i had some fat free whipped cream in the freezer. i'm not playing either.

hooplah

yeah yeah i dvr'd it and watched the royal wedding.  i FF through a lot of the ridic talking but kate is so freakin' classy, right?!?!  i can't get over it.  and if you have to wear sleeves on your wedding dress...that's the way to do it. gorg!! there's got to be "how to be a princess" classes she took b/c she so cool as a cucumber!!!!!!!

i went home for easter...it was beautimous!  very hectic, non-resting trip but needed.  and i got to meet/hang out with all my girlfriends and their little ones....WILD!!  hahahha but they were so cute i loved it.  and its funny when you see your friends that you had so many crazy college memories with running after a 1 year old, changing diapers and running after the toy-throwing bebe.  HA!  makes me laugh inside!!  and andree brought a portable ball pit WHHHHHHAAATT!?!?!?!?!?  i'm going to need that when we have one ;)

farmers market this weekend y'all!!!!!!!!  i was deathly sick the first weekend it opened and had to work the others so this is my first of the season.  it better be the best.ever. because i'm building it up in my head like ca-razy! ill let you know.
the rest of my glorious weekend off will be cleaning up for brett's arrival and finishing this dang chair.  its got to be done by next week. the.end.

morning muffins

lately i've been flipping through Bethanny's skinnydish book and trying to find a balance between healthy and delish.  brett says i'm focusing more on healthy so while he's gone i'll be doing some experimenting!!
i'm not much of a measurer (a la rachel ray) so forgive.....

1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup cake flour
1/2 cup sugar (raw, brown or granulated)
1/4-ish cup apple sauce
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup lowfat buttermilk
pinch of salt
1 1/2 tbsp melted butter
1-2 tsp cinnamon
2-ish tbsp honey
1/2 apple diced

mix until just blended. drop in muffin tin and bake 20 mins...turn muffins after 10 mins.
i sprinkled a little cinnamon and drop of honey on top right before baking.  originally this was a blueberry muffin recipe but i didn't have those so i added the apple sauce and apples and cinnamon. bethanny used oat flour but this is what i had.  the small amount of cake flour lightens up the wheat flour just enough. they might not be sweet enough for brett but i'll taste another one to make sure :)

i think i can...i think i can....

i keep telling myself this hoping that this project will just magically turn out AH-mazing.  truth is, i've NEVER attempted anything close to upholstery/recovering etc so i'm pretending i know what i'm doing and crossing my fingers.
as you can see, we're down to bare chair bones!  wahoooo!!!!  i'm going to go ahead and vacuum it (it had more dust and dirt 3 times the amount i ever saw at my late g-ma chatelains house in backwoods La.) and maybe even spray with some sort of freshener.  brett is afraid it will give us a disease or something...he's so dramatic.  and then high gloss black here i come!!  i'm still not sure about the fabric but i have time b/c i still  need to figure out the padding.  but here are some pics from yesterday.

lots ad lots of staples

almost there....

12:00:01 PM

i miss 24 with jack bauer...can you tell????
this is what our sunday looked like.....

03:25:45 PM

whoever made this chair went
staple gun crazy!!

i can't decide whether to cover it in drop cloth/duck cloth material in a neutral/pottery barn feel with high gloss black legs and black trim....or bring in some pattern and color?  i feel our living room is a little dull in the color department but we've opted not to paint it since we'll only be here for a couple years. i am working on a gallery wall of pictures so i'll keep updates on that too.
STAY TUNED.......

diy

i keep thinking i can recover this chair myself...actually brett said we can tackle this together but lord knows there is only one person who can work a sewing machine in this house!!
i called a few places and got labor estimates from $225-$400 for the chair plus cost of fabric.  i know i'll have to buy a few tools (i.e. staple gun) but i think i can get under those prices.  i don't want my $15 chair to turn into a $700 chair.

on a way different note, i'm not a Glee-k in any way, but last nights show was GREAT!!!  lots of songs that i LOVED and found myself tapping my feet while googling....or i was singing and dancing with hurley. whatev.

btw....

This is me moving to TN, taking a chance...but i knew :)

our happy little family!
One year ago today, brett proposed!

upholstery project???

i bought this for $15...i know....I KNOW!!!  AND its comfy.  I KNOW!!!!!  but, do i try to recover this myself or bring it somewhere and possibly ruin the low, low price tag of it?!?!?  truth be told....i'm a little hesitant to reveal this to brett, knowing i'm going to get some push back....but it was ONLY $15!!!!!
a tutorial would be great right about now....
ok GO!

dining room....

i'm really excited with how the chairs turned out!  as you can see from the second picture, i need to do something with the wall there...it's totally bare.  i'm thinking a mirror and then some black and white prints....maybe sea life???  brett really likes anything to do with ocean/water/etc.  i think i'll get a black and white striped rug for entryway to tie into it...wonder if brett will notice if it just shows up one day.......

furniture probation...

sad face times a million!  brett has "requested" a furniture buying probation (funny that he asked) so we can save money for travel.  i guess that's not a bad trade off but i want FURNITURE!! hahahaha
so memorial/my birthday weekend we're going to go to myrtle beach...hopefully with the Bushes...or is it Bushs'...anyway.  possibly seattle also and a trip home.  we can't forget about the two weddings brett and i are in later in the year!!!!wahoooooooooooooooooo
my dining room chairs arrived (thanks mom and sandy) so i'll post the gorg picture soon!
oh!  and i tried one of bethanny frankel's tofu chocolate muffins and they were awesome.  like tricked-brett awesome.  soooooo sneaky huh!?!?!?    i told him though but he wasn't happy they weren't fatty muffins.
i also got some apple sauce to make more sneaky treats.  love.

one more thing...

i want to add boxes around the sidebar titles...but i haven't mastered writing htmls or whatever....can anyone help????

New look

as you can see, i updated the look of the blog that no one reads :)  maybe its because it was easier than trying to redo my living room.  i told brett i was unhappy with the way the living room looks and feels...he continues to say "i don't have to complete the whole house right away" blah blah blah.  i know, i know. its just hard to stick to that.  my mom is coming in this weekend (with our FABULOUS new dining chairs) so maybe she'll have some input to offer.
until then, i'm hunkering down with puppy on my lap during this "winter storm" we have here in georgia.
k bye!

Thursday, January 6, 2011

new year, new projects....

i know most of us feel that blah feeling regarding our house...its so empty now without all the people, decorations and chaos that is christmas!  i'm feel especially BLAH about our living room....we decided not to paint it when we moved it b/c its a very large space with high ceilings but now it just seems so minimal and not in a good way.  i wanted to do a gallery of pictures on the wall surrounding the TV but brett wasn't a fan b/c we don't have a ton of pictures. hmmm...what else could we do with this WALL??????
i guess it doesn't help that i'm not waking up feeling refreshed.  headaches all the time, backaches all the time and this stupid ear infection/vertigo threw me for a loop.
brett and i decided not to NY resolutions but overall goals for ourselves, us, things we want to do together, etc.  i've decided that since i don't drink enough water, i will use our pretty pitcher we got from the wedding and have on hand yummy cucumber/mint water, lemon water, orange water, etc.  hopefully it will make it more appealing??!?! we'll see.
i'm also going to try to blog more but i feel like i don't have as much to offer....hmmmm......
that's all for now...sorry!
